How to Use the CSS Grid Generator
The generator is designed to be useful without requiring you to configure every CSS Grid property. By default, the More Options section is closed, so you can quickly create a grid by entering the three primary values.
- Set the number of columns: Enter how many columns your grid should contain.
- Set the number of rows: Enter the number of rows you want in the grid.
- Set the gap: Enter the spacing between grid items, such as
16px. - Review the preview: The interactive preview canvas updates to show your configured grid.
- Copy the CSS: Use the Copy button to copy the generated CSS and paste it directly into your stylesheet.
If you need more control, open More Options to customize sizing rules, row behavior, grid flow, and responsive behavior.
CSS Grid Layout Options
The additional configuration options let you create more specific layouts without manually writing the CSS Grid properties yourself.
Sizing Rules
Configure the column width, minimum row height, row behavior, and flow direction. Column sizing can be configured using values such as fractional units, while row behavior can determine whether rows automatically fit their content. The flow direction controls whether grid items are placed horizontally by row or using another available flow configuration.
Responsive Grid Settings
The Responsive Strategy section provides different approaches for adapting your grid to different container or viewport sizes. Choose between Fixed Tracks, Fluid Wrap, and Media Target strategies. Media Target allows the layout to switch at a specified breakpoint, while fluid and fixed strategies provide different ways of controlling how grid tracks behave as available space changes.
Live CSS Preview
As you change the configuration, the generated CSS is displayed beside the interactive grid preview. This makes the tool useful both for experimenting with layouts visually and for quickly generating CSS Grid code for websites, landing pages, dashboards, cards, galleries, and other responsive interfaces.
What Is CSS Grid?
CSS Grid is a two-dimensional CSS layout system that allows developers to arrange elements into rows and columns. A basic grid commonly uses properties such as display: grid, grid-template-columns, grid-template-rows, and gap. For example, grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr) creates three equal-width columns, while gap: 16px adds 16 pixels of space between grid items.
This CSS Grid Generator handles the repetitive setup for you, allowing you to adjust the layout visually and copy the resulting CSS instead of building every declaration manually.
FAQ
What is a CSS Grid Generator?
A CSS Grid Generator is a tool that helps you visually configure a CSS Grid layout and automatically generates the CSS needed to reproduce that layout.
How do I create a basic CSS Grid?
Enter the desired number of columns, rows, and the gap between grid items. The generator will update the preview and produce the corresponding CSS automatically.
What does the gap setting do in CSS Grid?
The gap property controls the spacing between rows and columns in a CSS Grid. For example, a 16px gap creates 16 pixels of space between adjacent grid items.
What does 1fr mean in CSS Grid?
1fr represents one fractional unit of the available grid space. Using repeat(3, 1fr) creates three columns that share the available space equally.
Can I make a responsive CSS Grid?
Yes. The generator includes responsive strategies for fixed tracks, fluid wrapping, and switching layouts at a media breakpoint. These options help you create grids that adapt to different viewport or container sizes.
Can I copy the generated CSS?
Yes. Once your grid is configured, click the Copy button in the CSS panel to copy the generated CSS to your clipboard.
