How to Use the Color Palette Generator

Generating and customizing a color palette only takes a few steps:

  1. Choose a base color. Enter a HEX color or use the color picker to select the starting color for your palette.
  2. Set the number of colors. Choose how many colors you want the generated palette to contain.
  3. Select a palette mode. Choose Monochrome, Analogous, or Split Complementary depending on the type of color relationship you want.
  4. Choose a color format. Display your colors as HEX, RGB, or HSL values.
  5. Adjust the contrast. Use the contrast control to change the variation between generated colors.
  6. Reverse the palette direction if needed. Enable the reverse option to reverse the direction of the color wheel.
  7. Customize individual colors. Hover over a color to access controls for moving, editing, deleting, adding, or copying that color.
  8. Export your palette. Copy the generated JSON or CSS variables directly from the export sections.
  9. Generate random palettes. Click Generate Random or press the spacebar to create a new random palette.

Customize Your Color Palette

The palette manager gives you control over every individual color. Hover over any color to reveal six editing actions:

  • Move left: Move the selected color one position to the left.
  • Move right: Move the selected color one position to the right.
  • Modify: Change the selected color to a different color.
  • Delete: Remove the color from the palette.
  • Add: Insert a new color next to the selected color. Newly added colors default to white.
  • Copy: Copy the color's code to your clipboard.

You can also click anywhere on a color in the palette to quickly copy its color code. This makes it easy to grab a specific HEX, RGB, or HSL value while working on a design.

Color Palette Modes

Monochrome

A monochrome palette uses variations of a single base color. This is useful for creating clean, cohesive designs with different shades, tints, and levels of contrast while maintaining a consistent color identity.

Analogous

An analogous palette uses colors that are close to one another on the color wheel. These palettes tend to feel harmonious and work well for interfaces, illustrations, branding, and other designs where the colors need to work naturally together.

Split Complementary

A split complementary palette combines a base color with colors related to its complementary color. This provides more contrast and visual variety than a monochrome or analogous palette while remaining easier to balance than a direct complementary scheme.

Preset Color Palettes

If you do not want to start from scratch, use one of the preset palettes available below the export options. Clicking a preset loads its colors into the main color palette manager. Once loaded, you can rearrange, edit, add, or remove colors just like you can with a generated palette. This makes presets a useful starting point when you need inspiration or want to quickly customize an existing color combination.

Export Color Palettes as JSON or CSS

Once your palette is complete, you can copy it in formats designed for development workflows.

JSON Export

The JSON export provides your colors as an array of color codes. This format is useful when transferring palette data between applications, storing colors in configuration files, or using palette data in JavaScript and other programming environments.

CSS Export

The CSS export converts each color into a CSS custom property such as --color-1, --color-2, and so on. You can paste these variables into your stylesheet and reference them throughout your website, making it easier to maintain consistent colors across your interface.

HEX, RGB, and HSL Color Formats

The generator supports three common color representations. HEX values are widely used in HTML and CSS. RGB represents colors using red, green, and blue channel values, while HSL represents hue, saturation, and lightness. Switching formats lets you work with your palette in the representation that best fits your design or development workflow.
